Augusta Savage Museum and Mentoring Center


The Augusta Savage Museum and Mentoring Center, completed in May 2021, is a multipurpose building which will serve the community in arts, education, and after-school tutoring. Space inside includes a dance studio, classroom space for music and visual arts, a computer lab, and an interactive museum space showcasing the life and work of sculptor Augusta Savage as well as a rotating display of other artists. The building was constructed at the site of the former Dunbar High School library with the goal of being an updated cultural and information resource space for the community.

See the new Historic Marker about the life and contributions of Augusta Savage in front of the Mentoring Center, and meet the teachers for the first after-school classes inside the Center starting September 6, 2022.

Art Workshops by Barbara Cornett
Teaching about different artistic mediums and artists beginning September through December 2022.

Intro to Dance by Leslee Bryan
Teaching elementary school students the basics of tap dancing, with a performance at the end of the school year.

Dress for Success by Felecia Hampshire
Teaching middle and high school students the job interview process, including how to dress for job interviews.

Reading Tutoring by Cynthia Reese
Teaching reading comprehension to elementary school students by introducing them to reading materials about cultures and places around the world.

Math Tutoring by Lucy Conrad
Assisting high school students with their specific needs in Algebra 1 and Algebra A/B.

Dance by La'Farrah Davis
