The Oakland

Oakland-Hotel

The Oakland Hotei was located on Spring Street, directly across the street from what is now known as Spring Park. This hotel enjoyed a wide popularity among winter visitors and tourists. The building was erected in 1880 in the form of a Swiss Cottage for a private residence. It was subsequently used as a private boarding house and later remodeled, enlarged, refurbished, and converted to a hotel. It included a series of wooden structures attached to each other and averaged two and one half stories in height and extended 125 feet back to Ferris Street.

The front was ornamented with spacious verandas and balconies and convenient, open galleries occurred at other points of the structure. The dining hall was 18 x 50 feet and could accommodate 100 people. The Oakland contained 36 finely appointed sleeping apartments, which were modem and elegant.

It had the reputation of being one of the best-conducted hotels in the State for that period of time.
