The Clarendon Hotel was located on the southwest corner of Magnolia Avenue and Walnut Street, across from the beautiful Spring. Established in 1871, it was a handsome four-story wooden structure with spacious balconies affording a fine view of the St Johns River. The Hotel was elegantly furnished and equipped with all modern conveniences of the time, namely spring beds, hair mattresses, electric bells and hot and cold sulfur baths. The water was conveyed from the Spring by means of a powerful pumping apparatus, propelled by a water wheel and capable of furnishing 200 guests.
Guests came from all over the country from December to May to enjoy the Spring, which was under the exclusive control of the Hotel. There was a substantial plank walk and a flight of stairs to bring visitors to the circular platform surrounding the Spring.
The Clarendon was destroyed by fire in 1900.
